Strategies for Foundations: When, Why, and How to Use Venture Philanthropy

    Get PDF
This paper investigates the venture philanthropy strategies of foundations. We identified six strategies of foundations engaging in venture philanthropy and explain them through case studies of four foundations based in four European countries. We find that there is a spectrum of engagement models for foundations and that even the same foundation may employ various strategies to fit their individual needs and goals. To most foundations, VP serves as a complement to existing practices and only in one case as an alternative

    Get PDF
This is the first report on the European Venture Philanthropy Industry published by the European Venture Philanthropy Association. The purpose of the report is to provide key statistics on an industry that is still in the early stages of evolution. The survey that enabled EVPA 's Knowledge Centre to collect the data presented will be repeated on an annual basis to provide independent industry statistics on European Venture Philanthropy. The survey itself will be refined according to the feedback received on the first survey and the objective is to create a longitudinal database with VP industry statistics that can be analysed over time. EVPA acts as the main repository of data on the VP industry in Europe. As venture philanthropy continues to grow, the industry building role of the association becomes increasingly important, thus also calling for the development of best practice and guidelines

A Practical Guide to Adding Value Through Non-financial Support

    Get PDF
This guide is targeted specifically at venture philanthropy (VP) and social investment (SI) practitioners, and more broadly at other social sector funders such as foundations, grantmaking organisations and impact investors who may benefit from understanding the value of the highly engaged approach of venture philanthropy. We use the term venture philanthropy organisations ("VPOs") or "investors" to refer to such social sector funders. Venture Philanthropy works to build stronger social purpose organisations (SPOs) by providing both tailored financing (using the whole spectrum of financing instruments, from grants to debt, equity and hybrid financing) and non-financial support. This manual focuses specifically on non-financial support, which we define as the support services VPOs offer to investees (SPOs) to increase their societal impact, organisational resilience and financial sustainability, i.e. the three core areas of development of the SPO.Social impactThe social change on the target population resulting from an SPO's actions.Financial sustainability The assessment that an SPO will have sufficient resources to continue pursuing its social mission, whether they come from other funders or from own revenue-generating activities.Organisational resilience The assessment of the degree of maturity of an SPO, in terms of the degree of development of the management team and organisation (governance, fund-raising capacity etc.)

This is the second edition of a working paper that was first published in 2008. Its goal is to assist start-up or early-stage Venture Philanthropy organisations (VPOs) in Europe by providing an insight into "what works" in a European context. It provides a definition of VP, an account for its evolution and latest developments, and a practical guide to how to set up and run a VP organisation. The new edition takes into account the enhanced experience of existing VPOs, the emergence of new VPOs or new financing instruments and the changes in the financial and economic climates in Europe and around the globe in the past years

This report contains key insights, survey data and case studies from the first year of the European and Spanish Communities of Practice on Impact Measurement and Management (IMM), coordinated by the Esade Center for Social Impact with the support of BBK. These groups of foundation professionals from 15 countries have come together to increase the level of transparency, knowledge-sharing and exchange within the European foundation sector on this topic. Building on the transcribed discussions and surveys of approximately 40 European foundations, the authors have developed several learnings they hope will help the whole European foundation sector, as well as any other organizations that want to measure and manage their impact. In this perspective, the report also includes tables outlining what the different 'levels' of practice might be, so that the reader can understand what the impact management learning journey looks like at different stages (beginner, on the journey, and advanced). In addition to the present report, the following page provides links to the recording of the launch of the report as well as presentation slides: https://www.esade.edu/en/faculty-and-research/research/knowledge-units/center-social-impact/research/community-practice
